Have you seen the plants and animals in the local zoo and wondered how many of them are from India?
Climate is the measurement of average weather conditions of a region over many years. Weather conditions in India can be broadly described as the “Monsoon Type”.
India’s climate keeps changing mostly due to its location. There are 4 seasons in India:
Winter: It lasts from December to February. Sun rays do not fall directly on the earth. So, the temperature is quite low, especially in North India.
Summer: It lasts from March to May. The sun falls directly on the surface of the earth. Hot and dry winds blow during the day.
Rainy or the southwest monsoon season: It lasts from June to September. It rains frequently throughout India. The winds blowing from the Arabian sea and Bay of Bengal bring rain clouds. It rains when these clouds hit the mountains in the north.
Autumn or the season of retreating monsoons: It lasts during October and November. Winds and rainclouds return to the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. It rains in the southern states of India, especially Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The climate of a region is affected by its location, distance from the sea, altitude, and relief. For example, Rajasthan experiences high heat, whereas Himachal Pradesh is cold. Coastal areas in Goa and Maharashtra are moderately hot whereas cities in Meghalaya experience heavy rainfall.
Due to various weather conditions, plants grow in different places in India like grass, herbs, shrubs and trees. Plants that grow on their own are natural vegetation. India has a wide variety of natural vegetation.
Reckless cutting of trees has caused the destruction of natural vegetation to a great extent. Programs like Van Mahotsav can help educate people about the importance of forests and trees, and make the earth green.
Forests are the natural habitat of many wildlife such as reptiles, mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, etc. Do you know the major forests and national parks of India?
Tigers are our national animal. They are in many parts of India.
For example, Asiatic lions find their home in the Gir forests of Gujarat.
Elephants live in the jungles of Assam and Kerala,
Camels are found in the deserts of Rajasthan, and
The Rann of Kachchh has wild donkeys.
Birds are equally abundant in India. The peacock is India’s National Bird. Many birds, such as flamingos, Osprey, Pintail Duck, etc. visit India in particular seasons. These are called migratory birds. Can you list the name of some birds in your area?
Many wildlife forms are slowly decreasing in India. The biggest reason for this is the greed of hunters. Hunters kill these animals and birds for various reasons. Many species have already gone extinct till date.
To protect them, the government has made several national parks, biosphere reserves and wildlife sanctuaries.
The government has also made laws and started various programs like Project Tiger and Project Elephant to protect these animals. Try to look up national parks and wildlife sanctuaries and their wildlife preservation methods.
You can also contribute towards saving wildlife and become a wildlife hero.
Every year, in the first week of October, the wildlife week is observed to create awareness about wildlife and preserve the natural habitat.
