We live in a world full of gadgets and machines that make our lives easier and more comfortable. Smartphones, laptops, satellites, cars, air-fryers etc. are some of the extraordinarily useful things that scientists and engineers have created. Do you know what these machines are made of? They are made of special materials called metals.
Metals are elements that are shiny, hard, and good conductors of heat and electricity. Because of the many incredible properties of metals, they are used in making machinery, automobiles, bridges and other objects that make our lives simple.
Let us explore some important uses of metals and how they make lives easier.
1. Metals are used in medicine
Metals help you gain strength and also receive the required treatment for a strong body.
The scary injection syringe needle used in hospitals is made of stainless-steel metal. Similarly, medical equipments, BP machines, X-Ray machines, and wheelchairs are made up of metals.
One of the metals, iron, helps strengthen your body too, therefore, the doctor prescribes iron supplements for anemia and zinc tablets for boosting immunity.
How does a thermometer tell your temperature? The liquid inside the thermometer touches a value and that is your body temperature. The liquid is nothing but a metal called Mercury!
2. Metals are used in automobiles
Metals make travelling easy for you.
How? Cars, bicycles, aeroplanes, trains and buses are made of metals. Wheel rims and engine blocks are made up of Magnesium and Aluminium. The doors are made from Steel. Copper is used in making wires and electric motors.
3. Metals are used in electronics
Metals help you bake as well as connect to your friends and family living far away.
Do you know that the wires in your phone and laptop are made of copper, gold and silver? They run on cobalt or lithium batteries. The body of a microwave is made of steel plates coated with zinc to prevent rusting.
4. Metals are used for decoration
Metals make you and your house look the best.
Have you noticed the shine in your mother’s jewellery? It is also made up of metals like gold, silver and platinum. Metals decorate your house also. Book stands, TV stands, beds, almirahs, vases and antique show pieces are made up of metals.
5. Metals are used at Home
Metals enable the cooking of your favorite food.
Every utensil in which you eat and cook food is made of metals. Spoons, plates and bowls are made of stainless steel. Pots and pans are made of Aluminium and Copper.
Wasn’t this an interesting and quick recap of all that metal has been doing for you? Furthermore, this is also an important Class 8 Science Chemistry topic in the chapter Metals and Non-metals.
